A Rudra Mala (or Rudraksha Mala) is a string of prayer beads made from the dried seeds of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree. It is sacred to Lord Shiva and is used for both meditation (Japa) and physical/spiritual protection. Key Features of a Rudra Mala The "Mukhi" (Faces): The most common feature is the number of natural clefts or lines on the surface, known as "Mukhis." While 5-Mukhi is the most common for general wellbeing, malas can range from 1 to 21 Mukhis. The 108+1 Count: A traditional mala consists of 108 beads plus one "Sumeru" (Guru bead). The number 108 represents the 108 energy centers in the human body. Biological Structure: Authentic beads have a hard, woody texture with a natural hole in the center. They possess unique electromagnetic properties that are said to influence the human heart rate and blood pressure. The "Bindu" or Tassel: Most malas are finished with a silk or cotton tassel (usually red or saffron), which symbolizes the energy flow through the beads.
